NLR and ECOMAT sign MoU at Paris Air Show

Bremen, 22 June 2023 - The Bremen Research and Technology Center ECOMAT and the Royal NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre (Koninklijk Nederlands Lucht- en Ruimtevaartcentrum) are joining forces to combine their scientific and commercial expertise in the fields of lightweight construction, hydrogen, materials research and virtual product development in aircraft construction. To this end, representatives of both institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Paris Air Show.

"Aviation must practically reinvent itself in order to be climate-neutral by 2050. This requires innovation in all areas of aviation and close international cooperation in knowledge institutions and industry. With the MoU, we are creating an alliance between the Dutch and Bremen aerospace industries," explains Dr Hubertus Lohner, Lead Techno Centre ECOMAT of Airbus.

The NLR operates in ECOMAT in the coworking space of esploro spaces GmbH. The future joint use of laboratory facilities and the technical center in the Bremen research center is intended to create synergies and promote scientific exchange. The aim is to carry out joint research projects and sharing infrastructure.

In the MoU that has just been signed, the two parties agreed to intensify cooperation in four areas: Circular economy, digitalisation of testing and certification processes, hydrogen technologies in aviation and materials for space applications. This represents a wide range of the technologies and elementary future processes needed for a more sustainable aviation and space industry.
