Signing of the MoU in Kobe

Japan and Bremen agree on expanded cooperation during delegation trip

Bremen, 3 September 2025. A delegation from the Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation and the Bremen Research and Technology Center ECOMAT is traveling to Kobe (Japan) from 1 to 5 September 2025. The aim of the trip is to further deepen the economic and scientific relations between Bremen and its Japanese partner region Hyogo/Kobe. In this context, ECOMAT has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kobe Material Testing Laboratory (KMTL). The agreement is intended to enable closer cooperation in the field of materials science.

For three years now, the cities of Bremen and Kobe have been working closely together, with reciprocal visits by business delegations, joint declarations of intent and participation in trade fairs. The focus is primarily on hydrogen technology. This is also the case this time: one stop on the trip is the International Industrial Fair 2025 Kobe, one of the largest industrial trade fairs in western Japan. There, ECOMAT is presenting its expertise in aerospace technologies. The North German hydrogen initiative HY-5 is also represented. In this initiative, the economic development agencies of the five northern German states have joined forces to jointly promote Northern Germany as a hydrogen location.

With the MoU, ECOMAT is expanding its international relations, says Hubertus Lohner, Chairman of the ECOMAT e. V. innovation platform: “For the sustainable aviation of the future, we need new materials, processes and testing methods that we are developing at ECOMAT. KMTL is one of the largest and most experienced materials testing laboratories in Japan and therefore the ideal partner to launch joint projects, exchange expertise and expand our knowledge together.”

In addition to the trade fair visit and the MoU signing, a comprehensive program is taking place that includes company and institutional visits as well as high-level political meetings. The agenda includes talks with the management of KMTL, ShinMaywa, Yamamoto Electric Works, HyTouch Kobe and Airbus Helicopters, an exchange with Kobe University and a meeting with the Deputy Mayor of Kobe.

“I am pleased that we are expanding and strengthening our cooperation with Japan and Kobe. Both regions will benefit from closer collaboration in the field of materials science. This visit by our delegation to Kobe is part of our ongoing cooperation. In 2023, I visited the city myself and met, among others, the Deputy Mayor of Kobe. I hope and am confident that the cooperation will continue to grow and intensify in the future,” said Kristina Vogt, Senator for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation.

The ECOMAT research and technology center was built by WFB Wirtschaftsförderung Bremen GmbH and has been operated by it since 2019.
